2024
Portrait of artist Georgia O’Keefe, (1887–1986) pioneering American artist recognized as the "Mother of American Modernism". Known for her large-scale, close-up paintings of flowers, landscapes, shells and bones, she blended abstraction with natural forms. Her work was defined by bold, simple, and personal depictions of the world around her. O’Keefe, although known for her work in the Midwest, spent a significant period of time working in Maine - from 1920 to 1928 she vacationed at a house on Long Sands Beach in York, Maine. Painted on a Warhawk Cigar Box. This piece is part of Virginia Mallon’s Artists &Poets series, celebrating legendary heroes in the art world. On the outside there is a portrait of the artist. On the inside is a detail inspired by one of her works.
